Mayor Chavez Encourages Youth to Run for Office continued…

“City Day,” the fifth program day for 40 high school juniors from the greater Albuquerque area, was designed to provide students with insight into specific areas of city government.  The intent was to provide participants with a first-hand look at the difficult issues that city leaders face such as funding, public safety and growth while learning about unique city programs. The ultimate goal is to encourage young people to be socially, conscientious leaders of the future.

The day was hosted by the Albuquerque Police Academy where students were greeted by Deputy Chief Castro of the Albuquerque Police Department and Captain Suazo from the Police Academy. Students learned about the Police Academy and the programs they offer.  They also had the opportunity to try out the Firearms Training Simulator.  The simulator was a big hit with students who said the demonstration helped them realize how challenging an officer’s job is.

Students also visited the Albuquerque Crime Lab where they met Captain Feist.  Other site visits for the day included the Southside Water Reclamation Plant, the Airport Tower, the Albuquerque Zoo and the Albuquerque Animal Care Center.  Students said the site visits helped them learn about programs they never knew existed and opened their eyes to the challenging work that is done in the city.

City Day was organized by Youth Leadership Curriculum Committee Members Kathleen Holt-Larese from Sandia National Laboratories, Mike Medley from Double Eagle Airport/City of Albuquerque, and Mike Provine from Molzen Corbin.  The curriculum team lent their expertise and time in organizing a fantastic day for students.  As members of the Youth Leadership Curriculum Planning Committee, their commitment and participation with the program has set an example of civic leadership for program participants.  The Youth Leadership Program and Program Days such as City Day are made possible through their efforts.

City Day was also made possible through the generous sponsorship and support of Bohannan Huston, Inc.  Bohannan Huston, Inc. has sponsored two Youth Leadership Program Days this year showing their deep commitment to the youth of Albuquerque and the city’s future.
