HEALTHCARE
Quality healthcare is a fundamental need. Yet
too many individuals find themselves without access to the care
they need while business continues to absorb ever-increasing
healthcare costs. The Chamber believes that the solution lies in
universal healthcare for all New Mexicans--but remains opposed
to a single-payer system. We stand committed to achieving
accessible and affordable healthcare and will support the
provision of greater transparency in the healthcare system as a
way to improve quality and lower cost.
REGIONALISM
More than 10 years ago, the Chamber began to
examine plans for regional success. The communities in our
region are joined by commonalities that contribute to the unique
character of our area, as well as our economic development and
infrastructure needs. As 'the whole' of the region has become
greater than its parts, the Chamber, working with UNM through
the Central New Mexico Business Coalition on Regionalism, is
developing a comprehensive multi-county economic development
plan which will benefit each area's unique assets. We all
benefit from the strengths of each other.
TRANSPORTATION
As the Albuquerque region continues to grow, the
need for efficient transportation systems becomes increasingly
critical. Without the ability to move people and goods from one
place to another, commerce cannot occur. The Chamber will
continue to work with its regional partners, government agencies
and others toward solving the area's transportation challenges
as a means of ensuring economic viability and sustainability in
the region.
ENTREPRENEURISM & SMALL BUSINESS
Entrepreneurs and small business people are the
bread and butter of the economy. The Chamber recognizes the
vital role of these individuals and continues to work to be
their voice at all levels of government. We will continue to
provide and improve the networking and knowledge-building events
and programs that meet their specific and unique needs. It is
important to us that they have the tools they need and that
unnecessary obstacles to doing business are minimized.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT/EDUCATION
For many years, the Chamber has been focused on
improving the state's public education system in an effort to
ensure that every child in the state receives a world-class
education despite socio-economic status. Specifically, efforts
to close the achievement gap, increase graduation rate, lower
drop out rates and improve accountability have been of paramount
importance. We are also striving to improve workforce training
and will continue our efforts in both these areas. Additionally,
support will be offered to UNM as it works to raise its status
as a top tier research university.
CRIME
For the greater Albuquerque region to continue
to grow and prosper, we must have a safe environment in which to
live and work. Simply put, crime is an economic development
issue that affects both our current and future economic vitality
as well as our quality of life. By working with others, we can
identify solutions to the problems of crime and are
committed to active participation in moving those
solutions forward.
