New Mexico is an isolated economic system that supplies the rest of the country and world with things that are vital to economic growth and that are unique to our state. These output include oil, gas, dairy products, electrical production, computer chips, solar panels, atomic weapons, green chilies, very bright minds and a state  that is so diverse that it is truly enchanting. We now have political leadership in Albuquerque that will put us back on an economic path that is sustainable. If we can find the same high quality leadership at the State level, the future for New Mexico is truly bright.

New Mexico is the last dry sun-belt state to have not developed and exploded like other surrounding states.  The first was Southern California, then Phoenix and eventually Las Vegas.  Albuquerque and New Mexico are the last of the dry sun-belt areas to have not experienced the type of exponential growth and exploitation that caused the economy to severely bubble.  I want to be a part of the effort that guides our great city and state to not make the same mistakes as other developed cities which contributed to the recession.  Albuquerque and New Mexico have deep rooted traditions, leadership and values which I believe will continue to secure our bright future.

The Albuquerque metro area is rapidly becoming one of the “just right” places to be in the United States.  Our location is close enough to major metropolitan areas to enjoy most of the positives that that can bring, but far enough away to still have “mystic.”  Our economy is a great mix of established industries, government facilities and utility companies mixed with the new and the upcoming businesses of the next wave of growth.  The relative affordability of housing, education, health care, tourism and entertainment compared to our neighbors remains an advantage for us.  And did I mention the climate?  We are in a very good place.

New Mexico and Albuquerque’s roots are historic.  This is the ‘Land of Enchantment’ and small business people from Native American artists and crafts people to the local grocer and hardware store owner will survive because they are resilient like the land.  We are now ready to choose a new leader for New Mexico and we must choose wisely.  When I cast my vote I will remember the words of the great Pueblo leaders to make my decision.

New Mexico’s beauty and diversity is evident when you meet and talk with its residents. The state has been blessed with mild winters and summers, making it attractive to all newcomers. Its outstanding research and development in technology has sustained its ranking in this field for years. The Land of Enchantment prospers even in this time of economic hardship, making its future bright.

Last year Time magazine identified New Mexico as the 2nd fastest state in terms of job growth, and the one indisputable fact in the housing industry is that jobs equals housing. Our potential for more, and higher paying, jobs is clearly greater than many other southwestern cities. And with new jobs will come a revitalized housing industry, which in turn will help lead our economic recovery as it always has. As a result of these important dynamics we are extraordinarily optimistic about the next couple of years.

New Mexico is home to a rich history of culture, exploration, entrepreneurism, technological innovation, perseverance and strong family bonds.  People live here because of a strong desire to be a part of the Land of Enchantment.  New Mexicans will endure the current economic adversity and be well positioned when the economy is again robust and vibrant.  In the meantime we must encourage New Mexico businesses to do business with other local businesses which will in turn accelerate the recovery of our economy.  We must also encourage all citizens to become more involved in their community and take a leadership role in shaping our future and the future of our youth.  Our economy is becoming more diverse each year and it is our diversity that will pave the way to a bright future for all of us.

My out-of-state business buyers tell me that Albuquerque is their chosen destination because of our climate, cultural diversity, opportunities, uniqueness, wide-open spaces, native cuisine, emerald blue skies, outdoor activities and recession-proof spirit.  I agree wholeheartedly!  Now all we need to do is spread the word.

I’m optimistic for our future to sell New Mexico and all aspects of this state as a place to visit.  Along with our geographical beauty, wonderful food, and unique culture, our people have made our state so special.  It is because of our wonderful culture of hospitality with genuine warmth that our visitors comment they want to come back again and again to visit New Mexico.
